KOTI (HOME 2012) JA YKSIÖ (BEDSIT 2013)
This dramaturgical pair of dance theatre works tells us two stories of the need for intimacy and of the complexity of adult life. How do we define ourselves in relation to others? And how do we do this when we live alone? Behind the façades we create for ourselves in our everyday lives, there are some rough issues that we must ultimately deal with on our own in this highly individualistic society. Both choreographies were created in collaboration with the star dancer of the Finnish National Ballet, Kare Länsivuori.
‘Home’ creates a luxurious setting for a crumbling personal relationship whose parties are getting lost in their familiar and expected roles and the fear of abandoning them. Regardless of physically sharing the same intimate space, the emotionally charged choreography turns the air between the two people impermeable. Affection is replaced by indifference.
Created a year later, ‘Bedsit’ provides a view into a block of flats. The piece tackles the theme of loneliness and ponders the difference between the public and private self. In the city, the neighbours are physically quite close, but in reality, people remain strangers to one another. It's not easy to meddle with your neighbours’ doings, and the parallel stories of everyday life may never meet. What will happen to the man in ‘Home’ when the constructed, chandelier-lit façades no longer hold up, the front comes tumbling down, and new life is discovered in a bedsit in the suburbs?
